Job Posting/Leadership Opportunity: Inspire San Diego Youth Civic Engagement Project Youth Intern
The ACLU and ACLU Foundation of San Diego & Imperial Counties (ACLU) seeks five part-time interns to join its defense of civil rights, civil liberties and the expansion of voting rights for a one-year commitment. Founded in 1933, the San Diego ACLU is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization, which promotes and protects individual civil rights and fundamental freedoms, including First Amendment rights, Equal Protection, Privacy, and Due Process, through education, litigation, policy advocacy, and organizing.
Inspire San Diego is a new program designed to engage youth in the civic process during their high school years with the goal of developing them into active, civically engaged citizens for our future. The program consists of three components – non-partisan voter engagement, leadership development and civic engagement in community. Inspire students will run voter registration drives/activities in their schools to register all eligible 17 & 18 years old to vote. Each team will also go through a series of workshops and classes to learn about civic engagement, government and the political process, history and becoming agents of change in their communities. Finally they will be connected into the larger San Diego justice community doing work to better their neighborhoods and San Diego as a whole. The Inspire program will invest in youth today to make change for tomorrow!
The Youth Intern leads a high school’s efforts to organize and empower youth through its on-campus Inspire San Diego youth civic engagement program twice a month. The Inspire Intern reports to Inspire San Diego Youth Organizer.
Five part-time positions of about 5 hours a week each. Working closely with the Youth Organizer, each intern will be responsible to develop a youth leadership team at one assigned Inspire host school. The intern will conduct logistical and administrative duties as well a mentor Inspire youth in their assigned schools.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
Work with 10-15 students ranging from high school freshmen to high school seniors.
Two afterschool meetings per month with student-team at designated high school (*These meeting exclude all vacation breaks. i.e. winter break, spring break, summer break)
Will meet regularly with Youth Organizer and Organizing Director
Assist students to coordinate and supervise on-campus Inspire activities school
Assist in coordinating and assuring student participation at Inspire San Diego leadership retreats.
Assist to coordinate and participate in a three-day summer leadership camp
The ACLU Inspire San Diego Youth Civic Engagement Program will give a stipend of $250 a month per intern and is willing to discuss cooperating with students to obtain course credit for their work. The internship requires a one full-year commitment.
Local college students (all levels) with an interest in protecting civil and constitutional rights.
A commitment to civil liberties and civil rights.
Current college student enrolled in one of the local colleges or universities
Excellent writing, speaking and analytical skills; the ability to evaluate and articulate complex issues and to communicate them to a variety of audiences including youth and immigrant populations.
Experience with online organizing, communication, and activism technology.
A commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance.
Experience working with youth strongly preferred.
Experience presenting and teaching youth strongly preferred.
Familiarity with and/or expertise in a broad range of civil liberties issues preferred.
