The UCLA Labor Center’s Dream Resource Center believes that all young people deserve the right to learn, be healthy, and pursue their dreams – regardless of immigration status. Every day we cultivate and promote immigrant youth leadership nationwide. Since its founding, the center has emerged as a national source for innovative research, education, and policy on immigration issues. Our work is critical to ensure immigrant youth continue to be at the forefront of the national conversations that directly impact their lives and families.

Dream Summer is a program of the Dream Resource Center. The program provides internship, leadership, and scholarship opportunities to immigrant youth across the country. Dream Summer is going into its fourth year. It has provided close to 350 internship placements to immigrant youth and raised $1.7 million in scholarships.

Job Summary:

The UCLA Labor Center is seeking two full-time and/or part-time Dream Summer coordinator positions. The Dream Summer coordinator plans, coordinates, and implements the UCLA Labor Center’s Dream Summer program, a national leadership development and internship program for immigrant youth. The coordinator is responsible for organization and student outreach; budgeting and oversight of related clerical/administrative details; developing curriculum and event planning for orientation and closing retreats; program facilitation, evaluation, and reporting.

The Dream Summer coordinator also conducts education and outreach to immigrant student networks nationwide through public speaking and social and traditional media, develops relationships with funders, and supports in the drafting of funding proposals and narrative reports for funders, partners, and stakeholders. The coordinator is part of the larger Dream Resource Center team, and supports where possible with the coordination and implementation of related activities. The position is based at the Downtown Labor Center in Los Angeles, California.

Core Functions and Duties:

Research, Project Planning, and Implementation:

  • Research on immigrant student demographics and organizations that provide assistance to immigrant students
  • Implement and plan regular DRC research, leadership, education, and training workshops and conferences
  • Develop and present ideas for new programs based on consultation with constituency groups, research, and analysis of community needs
  • Plan and develop new programs, including determining subject matter content and need, in conjunction with planning teams made up of Project Directors, administrative staff, community leaders, organizers, and students.
  • Facilitate program planning teams made up of Project Directors, administrative staff, and partners.
  • Develop and participate in evaluation of the program, facilitators, and instructors;recommend changes to the program based on knowledge of participants and evaluation of previous programs.
  • Coordinate student internships and placements
  • Train and supervise interns and volunteers, including delegating responsibility and evaluating performance.
  • Develop workshop and conference materials for reproduction and distribution.
  • Manage logistical aspects of project meetings, workshops, and conferences, including planning, event management, and contact/liaison for participants and planners.
  • Coordinate site logistics with UCLA Downtown Labor Center administrative staff, including room arrangement, set-up and audiovisual requirements
  • Develop project budgets; insure that projects remain within budgets

Public Outreach and Fund-raising:

  • Represent the DRC at workshops, conferences, classes, and events
  • Outreach to immigrant students and allies nationwide
  • Network nationally with organizations that provide assistance to immigrant students
  • Participate in public speaking on immigrant youth issues to students, faculty, community groups, and elected officials
  • Conduct traditional media outreach
  • Design and implement social media outreach and educational campaigns
  • Develop and coordinate plans for program promotion
  • Manage development and distribution of DRC outreach materials
  • Outreach to funders for DRC programs; function as liaison with funder contacts
  • Support the development of grant applications, letters of intent, concept papers, and narrative reports for funders.
  • Support the development and implementation of fundraising efforts through individual donors and partner organizations.

Qualifications:

  • Proven systematic organizational skills to a) work independently with minimal supervision, b) determine workload priorities and tasks to complete work in a timely manner, and c) identify and resolve problems.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact sensitively and to establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, students, community members, workers, outside organization officials and staff from diverse social, cultural, and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative team working relationships with other staff, the university, and the community.
  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • Public speaking skills and experience
  • Experience and skills in social media
  • Knowledge of and experience with immigrant youth issues
  • Knowledge of and experience with participatory education techniques. (Preferred)
  • Fluent bilingual English/Spanish skills, including oral interpretation and written translation. (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of and experience in administrative processes (Preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in related subject
